Recovery mission for fishing boat captain off Canso

UPDATE: Transportation Safety Board of Canada members are investigating; TSB officials tell The Hawk they arrived on scene early this afternoon.

They say the team will gather information, conduct witness interviews and assess the occurrence; officials expect to have more information early next week.

The Hawk has learned the search for a missing fishing boat captain off Guysborough Co. has become a recovery mission; a family member posted the news on social media.

Three crew members of the Fisherman’s Provider II were rescued when the vessel ran aground on some rocks on Frying Pan Shoal off Canso and started taking on water earlier this week.

RCMP and paramedics responded to Whitman Wharf in the community at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The skipper remained on the boat; officials with Joint Task Force Atlantic in Halifax say a Hercules aircraft and a Canadian Coast Guard vessel have been searching the area.

The boat belongs to Fisherman’s Market in Bedford.
