Cape Breton named best island four years running

Cape Breton has taken the top spot in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards.

It has been ranked #1 Island in Canada for the fourth year in a row.

Terry Smith, CEO of Destination Cape Breton, tells The Hawk it’s huge for our tourism industry.

“This is going to be something that is going to put Cape Breton, I think, on bucket lists of people.”

Smith said the credit for the win goes to the tourism business operators and the people of the island, for giving visitors a welcoming experience.

He said Travel + Leisure is one of the foremost travel media companies in the world, and it’s a huge show of confidence by the readers who voted for Cape Breton.

“It’s just such a strong testament to what an enduring destination we are.”

Smith said, with the COVID-19 pandemic, they’ll take all the good news they can get.

He said he’s hopeful the accolade will bring more people to Cape Breton and help the hard-hit tourism industry to recover.
