Coastal protection rules concerns, Mi’kmaq flag raising

A local council is concerned about the regulatory burden from proposed costal protection regulations.

Richmond Co. councillors discussed the new rules at September’s regular council meeting Monday evening.

Warden Amanda Mombourquette tells the Hawk council supports the intent of the Coastal Protection Act but have concerns with provisions making enforcing the rules a municipal responsibility.

“We’re generally very supportive, but we have some real concerns,” she said. “We’re really concerned about the downloading of that responsibility to municipal units. I think the feeling of council was it’s a provincial act, it should be provincially administered and enforced.”

Mombourquette said they’re concerned they really don’t have the resources to enforce it.

She said council will be sending a letter outlining their concerns to their provincial counterparts.

Meantime, the municipal building in Arichat will be sporting a new flag soon.

It’s in honour of Mi’kmaq History Month.

Mombourquette said she’ll be reaching out to Potlotek First Nation to ask if they’d like to partner on the flag raising ceremony.

“We thought it would be a nice gesture to do a ceremonial flag raising at the municipal office.”

Council also voted to close the municipal office and facilities on Thursday in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
