An Inverness County councillor is retiring.

Alfred Poirier announced his upcoming retirement from municipal council, which will take effect on December 31st.

The announcement took place at the regular meeting of council.

Poirier was first elected in 2012 as the representative for District 1 which covers the areas of Chéticamp, Pleasant Bay and Meat Cove.

He also served as the Deputy Warden from 2016 to 2020.

Warden Laurie Cranton says it has been a privilege working with Poirier.

“[I’m] sad to see him go and he’s done a lot of work on behalf of his Acadian community”

A special election will be called for District 1 in the new year.
