Sidney Poitier a trailblazer in Hollywood films has passed away at the age of 94. Many of his early roles dealt with race in mainstream Hollywood films before others opted to do so.
Poitier was the first African American man to be nominated for an Academy Award eventually winning his first in 1964 for in role in Lilies in the Field.
In 2009 Poitier was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom the nation’s highest civilian honour with President Barack Obama saying ” “It’s been said that Sidney Poitier does not make movies, he makes milestones … milestones of artistic excellence, milestones of America’s progress”
