Today is Pink Shirt Day (Anti-bullying Day)
The movement, which is now recognized around the world, began in Nova Scotia back in 2007.
Chuck McNeill was in grade 9 at Central Kings High school in Cambridge (near Kentville) He wore a pink shirt to the first day of school and was bullied for it.
12th grade students, David Shepherd and Travis Price were having none of it and bought and handed out 50 pink shirts to their classmates to wear.
Travis continues to be a leader in the Pink Shirt Day movement and won the Meritorious Service Medal of Canada (which is awarded for an action performed in an outstanding manner that brings great benefit or honour to the Canadian Forces or to Canada) for his work in bullying prevention and mental health advocacy.
Rodney MacDonald was premier at the time and, inspired by the story, proclaimed the second Thursday of September (to fall in line with the beginning of the school year) as Stand Up Against Bullying Day.
