Fireworks and dogs – tips on keeping your dog calm

As we head into Canada Day long weekend, fireworks may be a part of the celebrations. While they are fun for most of us, not so much for dogs.

A few ways you can prepare your dog if your community will be having a fireworks display:

  • Make sure they are inside when the fireworks are due to begin
  • If they get very nervous, use a sound machine or white noise app on your phone to cover the sound (or the radio!)
  • Take them for a walk in the evening before dark so they can burn some energy
  • If they develop serious anxiety around fireworks, it’s probably the same during thunderstorms, there are products available called “quiet ears” that some pet owners have found help.

If you plan to set off fireworks at your home, let your neighbors know so they can prepare!

Happy Canada Day!
