A judge has sentenced a Cape Breton man to 18 years in jail for the 2018 death of Cassidy Berndard.
The sentence was handed down to Dwight Austin Isadore on Wednesday afternoon in Port Hawkesbury.
Isadore was originally up on second-degree murder but the charge was downgraded to manslaughter in exchange for the guilty plea.
He had an on and off relationship with Bernard at the time of her death.
The 22-year-old We’koqma’q woman was looking after the former couple’s twin girls when she was killed.
Isadore also admitted to to abandoning his infant daughters.
They were found suffering from severe dehydration, along with Bernard’s body.
