St Francis Xavier University Community Remembers Former President

Last Friday, The St Francis Xavier University community and the area of Antigonish celebrated the life of reverend doctor Gregory Aloysius MacKinnon who passed away last week at the age of 98.

Father Greg graduated from STFX in 1946 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and was later ordained to priesthood in 1950. After four years as parish priest in New Waterford, he returned to STFX and was appointed the universities spiritual director. He later became the universities president, a role he held from 1978 until 1990.

He was also a recipient of the Golden Jubilee Medal of Queen Elizabeth the Second.

In his pursuit of excellence for the university he was known for balancing the legacy of the past with the realities of the modern educational setting.
