There was a false alarm at the Antigonish Mall this morning
Two 911 calls came in reporting an armed man with a mask at the shopping centre
The building was put under lockdown and when RCMP members responded to the scene there was no sign of an armed man. No one present at the mall saw anyone matching the description of the alleged suspect in the 911 call and surveillance footage from the mall didn’t yield any results either. The lockdown at the mall has since been lifted.
Police later determined the 911 calls did not come from the mall, but they did originate from somewhere in Antigonish County. Investigators are still trying to figure out who made the false calls.
RCMP Corporal Chris Marshall wants to remind people that 911 should only be used when there is a real emergency and making false, prank, or frivolous calls takes away emergency resources from people that really need them. Misusing 911 can also land you in legal trouble. All 911 calls are taken very seriously. For nonemergency police matters you can contact police detachments directly.
