A Nova Scotia woman has been found guilty on animal cruelty charges. Belinda Singer aged 42 from Noel was sentenced under the Animal Protection Act of Nova Scotia.
She was convicted in Shubenacadie Provincial Court on September 15th for one count of permitting an animal to be in distress and was fined $500 and handed a ten-year probation from owning animals.
The animal abuse incident dates back to July 17th of this year when the Nova Scotia SPCA received an emergency complaint about abandoned animals and a deceased dog in Singer’s home. Upon entering the residence, officers found one dog and one cat that needed veterinary care. A second dog was found dead in a crate. The cat and the dog were seized, and the remains of the deceased dog were taken to the Department of Agriculture’s Animal Health Laboratory for a necropsy. The cause of death was likely dehydration and emaciation due to malnutrition.
Jo Anne Landsburgh, the Chief Provincial Inspector for the SPCA enforcement team wants to remind Nova Scotians that there is support available to pet owners and there are no fees to surrender them to SPCA care. The SPCA has a zero-tolerance policy for animal cruelty and neglect.
