Antigonish native Matt MacPherson officiates 1,000th NHL game

It’s a big milestone for an Antigonish native who is officiating his 1,000th NHL game, Sunday evening.

Matt MacPherson is a linesman for the game between the Boston Bruins and the Pittsburgh Penguins in Massachusetts.

In a post on social media, the Antigonish Minor Hockey Association says, “well done”, and congratulates MacPherson who they say was supported in person by family and friends before the game.

According to the NHL Officials Association, the 36-year-old began officiating in the minor hockey system at the age of 15.

He quickly climbed the ranks and began in the QMJHL in 2005 then got called to the NHL in 2011 and never looked back.

It was in 2014 that he landed his first playoff game.
