Community food project takes a big step forward

A Cape Breton community food project is working to expand its offerings around the island.

The Pan Cape Breton Food Hub bought a building in Bras d’Or and turned it into a processing facility.

Executive Director Alicia Lake tells The Hawk it’ll allow them to bring more produce to the market year-round.

“We’re going to be able to start to actually wash and process vegetables, so it will really allow farmers to grow more, have access to a larger market,” she says “We’ll be able to get to customers, that typically, we wouldn’t be able to.”

Lake says that includes schools and other institutions.

She says they’ll be able to offer new products as well.

“It’s also going to allow us to do a whole new line of products such as meal kits, which are tremendously popular,” she says. “We’re sure that this will allow us to sell a lot more local products.”

Lake says there’s a lot of excitement from producers, who are going to be able to get their products to more people.
