Antigonish town councillors are reviewing a provincial report on affordable housing.
Mayor Laurie Boucher passed the report on to councillors for review at June’s regular town council meeting Monday night.
After, Boucher said affordable housing- as well as available housing- is an important issue facing the town.
“One of the challenges that we have here in the Town of Antigonish is that we have a limited space,” she said. “Two square miles is not a big space.”
Boucher said that limits how much town officials can do.
She said they’re still trying to find ways to do their part.
“We created in our municipal planning strategy the ability for landowners or property owners to make more housing,” she said. “More duplexes (and) putting some granny suites in backyards.”
Boucher said there were some good components in the report.
She said reps with the Nova Scotia Federation of Municipalities didn’t have a seat at the table, even though they have a lot to say on the topic.
