The warden of the Municipality of the District of Guysborough says councillors will keep fighting reduced hours at their two libraries.
Reps with Eastern Counties Regional Library announced a reduction of hours at Cyril Ward Memorial Library in Guysborough and Canso’s library in March.
After April’s regular municipal council meeting Wednesday afternoon, Vernon Pitts, the warden of the municipality, said they’re not happy.
“Not even a little bit, but we’ll just keep trying to move the ball forward- we’ll keep lobbying and we’ll keep writing our letters,” he said. “Hopefully, our MLA is going to be able to help us in this situation, but we’ll have to see what comes down eventually.”
Library reps said a new provincial funding formula means municipal officials must pay for their own library service, and they asked councillors if they’d increase their funding, but they declined.
Pitts said their in-kind contributions to both library buildings shouldn’t be ignored.
“We should be certainly considered for the contributions we do make in regards to capital and operating (expenses).
Pitts said they’re considering installing solar panels at several municipally-owned buildings, including both libraries.
He said that would be a cost to them, not library reps.
