Crews Hoping To ‘Get Good Handle’ On Yarmouth Wildfire Today

A wildfire in Yarmouth County is still 60 percent contained as of this morning.

The Department of Natural Resources and Renewables says the area of the fire is still about 3,100 hectares near Horseshoe Lake.

Wildfire Prevention Officer Kara McCurdy says provincial crews are covering different sections and looking for hot spots.

“There’s not a lot of smoke on the fire, there are small patches that the crews are working on. There is lots of activity with moving equipment and helicopters bucketing those hotspots and helping to put it out

She says some shower activity could come tomorrow, and depending on humidity today, crews are hoping to get a good handle on the fire.

The blaze is not expected to reach any communities.

McCurdy says five new forest fires have popped up through the province recently, and it’s important for citizens to follow daily burn restrictions.
