Green candidate says Conservative opponent wasn’t properly chosen

The Green Party candidate in Central Nova says Conservatives didn’t show respect for local party members when they chose George Canyon to run in the riding.

Barry Randle says party officials went above the heads of local members after former Westville Mayor Roger MacKay left the race, and that will fundamentally change how the election plays out.

Randle tells The Hawk it was inappropriate to name a candidate without input from local members.

“The central party just imposed a candidate on them,” he says. “I think it’s kind of despotic of the Conservative Party to do something like that, and I know it’s upset an awful lot of their membership.”

Randle says they should have democratically selected a new candidate.

He says some long-time Conservatives might be looking elsewhere in the Oct. 21 federal election.

Randle says the Greens have a conservative fiscal policy that’s more likely to attract Conservatives than the policies of either the Liberals or New Democrats.
