Guysborough warden says long-term fix required for Canso hospital

The warden of the Municipality of the District of Guysborough says no one wants a band-aid solution when it comes to the Eastern Memorial Hospital.

The Canso hospital started closing overnight due to a lack of nursing coverage in May.

Community members formed a group to work with provincial officials to find a solution shortly after.

After June’s regular municipal council meeting Wednesday afternoon, Vernon Pitts, the municipality’s warden, said they continue working on a long-term fix.

“If they could come up with three or four nurses, you’d see it open tomorrow,” he said. “It’s not just to get it open today- if we’re going to open it, let’s ensure that it remains open for years to come.”

Pitts said they need a sustainable plan that includes new, younger nurses who will be at the hospital for a long time.
