Local seafood processor gets half a million federal dollars

Two Cape Breton seafood processors are getting a share of federal spending.

Mike Kelloway, MP for Cape Breton-Canso, announced $536,753 for the companies through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

Lobsters ‘R’ Us seafood in Lower L’ardoise, Richmond Co., is getting a $450,000 loan to expand its facility, increase storage, and add ice-machines.

That business is also getting a $50,000 grant for upgrades to meet COVID-19 public health guidelines.

Kelloway says the pandemic has been hard on fishing communities, but they’ve showed real strength.

“Rural fish and seafood processing businesses have long been a pillar of the Atlantic Canadian economy,” he says. “These investments from the Government of Canada will help them continue to adapt, grow and support the economy so we can bounce back from the pandemic stronger than ever.”

As well, A&L Seafoods Limited in Louisburg, Cape Breton Regional Municipality, is getting a $36,753 grant to buy personal protective equipment.
