Inverness County Tragedy: Beached Whale Dies

Inverness County suffered a huge loss last week after a whale washed ashore. “On Friday afternoon we were getting a report of a large whale that had come ashore near Craigmore, that animal turned out to be a live sperm whale an animal between 40 to 50 feet long.” stated Tonya Wimmer the Executive Director of the Marine Animal Response Society. “It really wasn’t doing well, and it was very thin, those are very hard to rescue especially when they are ill.”

The whale later died, and the next step is to try to determine what made the whale sick and what lead to its death. If you see a marine mammal in distress, call the Marine Animal Response Society hotline 1-866-567-6277.
