Local MLA lends support to group trying to restore 24-hour coverage at Canso hospital

A Guysborough stakeholder group trying to find a way to return the Eastern Memorial Hospital, in Canso, to 24-hour coverage has gained the support of a local MLA

Lloyd Hines, MLA for Guysborough-Eastern Shore-Tracadie, says one of his staff is acting as interim coordinator and he’s acting as a facilitator for the group.

The group will include community members, local political leaders, and health authority representatives.

Hines tells The Hawk, the Canso Hospital is especially important because of the fishing industry.

“The occupation is one of the most dangerous occupations in the world thats the fishing industry… people get hurt in that business,” says Hines.

He says those people need access to emergency medical care and they’re working to find new nurses.

“With the incentives that are in place from the Nova Scotia Health Authority and the additional incentives, generously, put in by the Municipality of the District of Guysborough, then we really have some tools in the toolbox that can help us on the recruitment side,” says Hines.
