Local sports preview (Saturday)

The StFX men’s hockey team plays their AUS regular season finale when they visit the UPEI Panthers in Charlottetown.

The X-Men, coming off a loss against UNB in Fredericton Friday night, are third in the seven-team conference; they’ve won three of the first four games in the five-game season series.

Game time is 7 p.m.

There is one game in the Cape Breton West High School Hockey League.

The SAERC Saints are home to the Richmond Academy Hurricanes .

Puck drop at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre at 7:30 p.m.

The Cabot Highlanders are on the road for a pair of weekend games in the Nova Scotia Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

They travel to Truro to take on the Fundy Thunder.

The Highlanders (2-19-2), who have lost three in row, are last in the eight-team league with five points, 11 points back of Cape Breton for seventh; the Thunder (17-8-1), who have won the first four games in the five-game season series, are third with 35 points.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The Highlanders visit the Admirals Sunday morning.

 

The Cape Breton Panthers host the Fundy Nationals twice to close out the Nova Scotia Female Midget AAA Hockey League.

The Panthers (12-6-4), with one loss in their last three games, are fourth in the seven-team league with 28 points, two points behind the Northern Lightning for third, and 19 points ahead of the fifth-place Nationals (4-15-1); they won the first two games in the four-game season series by a combined score of 16-2 in Saint John in October.

Game time is 5 p.m.

The teams meet again in their regular season finale Sunday morning.

 

The Novas play the first of back-to-back home games in the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League.

They host the East Hants Rangers.

The Novas (14-14-1), who have won two of their last three, are seventh in the 12-team league with 29 points, a point behind Cole Harbour for sixth, and three points ahead of the eighth-place Rangers (12-14-2).

It’s the third and final regular season game between the teams; they split the first two.

Puck drop at the Antigonish Arena is 1 p.m.

The Novas host Cole Harbour in Port Hawkesbury Sunday afternoon.

 

The Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals visit the Hants East Tigers in the Northern Nova Scotia High School Hockey League.

The Tigers have won the first three games in the four-game season series.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.

 

It’s the last night of the regular season in the Antigonish Rural League.

The St. Croix Angels take on the County Outlaws at 7 p.m.; the Pleasantdale Panthers play the Heatherton Warriors at 8:45 p.m.

Both games are at the Antigonish Arena.

The opening round of league playoffs gets underway Feb. 16.

 

The Battle of Nova Scotia resumes in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

St. Andrews’ Declan Smith and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles host the Halifax Mooseheads.

It’s the second game in as many nights for both teams- the Screaming Eagles lost against Moncton at home Friday night.

It’s the ninth and final regular season game between the provincial rivals; Halifax has a 5-3 lead through the first eight.

Puck drop at Centre 200 in Sydney is 7 p.m.

 

The Dr John Hugh Gillis Royals Sr Boys Basketball tournament is underway. The Host Royals tip off against Hants North at 9am.

The StFX basketball teams host the Saint Mary’s Huskies in AUS action at the Oland Centre in Antigonish.

Both games are worth four points in the conference standings.

The women get underway at 6 p.m.; the men tip off at 8 p.m.

 

Members of the StFX track and field teams are in Halifax for AUS competition.

The X-Men and X-Women are taking part in AUS relays.

They’ll remain in Halifax to participate in the Saint Mary’s Open Sunday.
