Local sports preview (Saturday)

The Cape Breton West Islanders visit the Valley Wildcats for game three in their Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League playoff series.

The Islanders won Friday night’s game in Berwick to take a 2-1 lead in their best-of-five, first-round series.

Game time is 3:30 p.m.

The series remains in Berwick for game five Sunday afternoon.

The Cabot Highlanders play the first of two weekend home games in as many days in the Nova Scotia Minor Midget AAA Hockey League when they host the Basin Armada.

The Highlanders (4-23-3), winners of back-to-back games, are last in the eight-team league with 11 points, four points back of Cape Breton for seventh; the Armada, who have won the first four games in the five-game season series between the teams, are second.

Puck drop at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre is 6:30 p.m.

The Highlanders host Cape Breton in Cheticamp Sunday afternoon.

The Northern Selects have a chance to advance to the Nova Scotia Female Midget AAA Hockey League final.

They visit the Penguins in game three of their semi-final.

The Selects won the first two games in the best-of-five, first-round series by a combined score of 15-1 in February; the league playoffs took two weekends off while players participated in the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alberta.

Game time is 4 p.m.

The Novas will try to force a third and deciding game when they visit the Cole Harbour Storm in game two of their Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League playoff series.

The Storm won the opening game of the best-of-three series 5-3 in Antigonish March 2.

Game time is 6:30 p.m.

A Novas’ win extends the series to a third and deciding game in Cole Harbour Sunday morning; a loss, and their season is over.

The Antigonish Rural League final could be set following a pair of games four at the Antigonish Arena.

The Pleasantdale Panthers play the St. Croix Angels at 7 p.m.; the Panthers lead the best-of-seven, first-round series 3-0.

The Heatherton Warriors take on the County Outlaws at 8:30 p.m.; the Warriors are up 3-0 in that semi-final.

The winners of each series advance to the final.

Both of the province’s Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams are in action.

St. Andrews’ Declan Smith and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles host the Charlottetown Islanders at Centre 200 in Sydney for the second time in as many nights; Islanders won Friday night’s game between the teams.

The Halifax Mooseheads (46-14-3) visit Pleasant Valley’s Jacob Hudson, Antigonish’s Jake and Sean Stewart and the Moncton Wildcats (34-20-9).

The Mooseheads have won six of the first seven regular season games between the Maritimes Division rivals.

Both games get underway at 7 p.m.

Halifax remains in New Brunwick to visit Saint John Sunday afternoon.
