Local sports preview (Saturday)

Both StFX hockey teams are on the road for AUS action.

The X-Men, coming off Friday night’s home win against Acadia, are in Halifax to square off with the Saint Mary’s Huskies.

The Huskies have won two of the first three games in the five-game season series between the teams.

The X-Women, winners of back-to-back regular season games and six of the last seven, are in Fredericton to face the UNB Varsity Reds.

StFX (12-5-1) is third in the eight-team conference with 25 points, four points behind UPEI for second; UNB, with wins in the first two games of the four-game season series, is close behind in fourth.

Both games get underway at 7 p.m.

The two local teams in the Nova Scotia Female Midget AAA Hockey League are on the road.

The Northern Selects face Halifax in Kentville at 2 p.m.

It’s a match-up of the top two teams in the seven-team league; the Selects (18-0-0), who have yet to lose in the 2019-20 regular season, are in top spot with 36 points, with Halifax (16-1-1) three points back in second.

The Selects shutout Halifax 2-0 in Bedford in the first of four regular season games between the teams in December.

It’s the first half of a weekend home-and-home series; the teams square off again in New Glasgow Sunday afternoon.

The Panthers play the Penguins in Dartmouth at 4 p.m.

The Panthers (5-9-5), winless in six straight regular season games, are third with 15 points, 18 points behind Halifax for second, and two points ahead of the two teams tied for fourth; the Penguins (4-12-3) are sixth with 11 points.

It’s the third game in the four-game season series between the teams; the Penguins earned a win and a tie against the Panthers in Membertou in September.

The teams meet again in Dartmouth Sunday afternoon.

There are a pair of games in the Antigonish Rural League.

The Pleasantdale Panthers play the St. Croix Angels at 7 p.m.; the County Outlaws face the Heatherton Warriors at 8:30 p.m.

Both games are at the Antigonish Arena.

The StFX basketball teams host the Dalhousie Tigers in AUS action for the second time in three nights.

The X-Men (4-5), losers of two of their last three, are tied with Memorial for second in the eight-team conference with 12 points, 14 points behind the undefeated Tigers (9-0) for top spot, and two points ahead of Cape Breton and UNB, the two teams tied for fourth.

Dalhousie has won the first two games in the four-game season series between the teams, including a 97-54 win in Antigonish Thursday.

The X-Women (2-7), who have one win in their last six, are seventh in their eight-team conference with six points, two points behind UNB for sixth, and four points ahead of the last-place Tigers (1-8).

The teams have split the first two games in their four-game season series after StFX’s 65-46 win in Antigonish Thursday.

The women get underway at 6 p.m.; the men tip off at 8 p.m.

The StFX track and field teams are on the road.

The X-Men and X-Women are in New Brunswick for the Moncton Open.
