Local sports preview (Wednesday)

There are a pair of games in the Cape Breton West High School Hockey League.

The SAERC Saints (1-2-0) host the Cape Breton Highlands Academy/NDA Huskies at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre.

The Inverness/Baddeck Academy Rebels (2-0-0) visit the Eskasoni Coyotes (2-0-0) in match-up of the top two teams in the six-team league.

Both games get underway at 7 p.m.

St. Andrews’ Declan Smith, Beaver Meadow’s Ryan MacLellan and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles wrap up a three-game road trip when they visit the Charlottetown Islanders in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The Screaming Eagles (10-8-1), who have lost three straight, are tied with the Islanders (10-7-1) and Val-d’Or for ninth in the 18-team league with 21 points, two points behind Acadie-Bathurst for eighth, and three points ahead of 12th-place Gatineau.

It’s the second game of the season between the Maritimes Division teams- Cape Breton doubled Charlottetown 4-2 in Sydney in October.

Game time is 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Moncton Wildcats have called up Antigonish’s Jake Stewart from the Pictou Co. Crushers of the Maritime Hockey League for a pair of home games; the Wildcats host Baie-Comeau Wednesday night and Sherbrooke Friday.
