Mayor says pool is regional asset

Port Hawkesbury‘s mayor says town officials want to keep the Strait Area Pool sustainable.

The funding formula for the pool was discussed during June’s regular town council meeting Tuesday night.

After, Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, the mayor of Port Hawkesbury, said funding from their municipal counterparts in Inverness Co. and Richmond Co. has been reduced.

“The usership of that pool is coming from all of our surrounding municipalities, not just the Town of Port Hawkesbury,” she said. “It’s quite important that we make sure that we support that asset in a way that reflects the service delivery and the usage of the pool.”

Chisholm-Beaton said it’s a regional asset, and they want to maintain the facility with the help of their neighbours.

She said they’ll be reaching out to their counterparts in nearby municipalities.

“We will be looking for a scenario that will allow for our pool to remain sustainable,” she said. “We want to maintain that asset as a pool that will benefit our region.”

Town officials say it’s a one-third funding agreement among Port Hawkesbury, Inverness Co. and Richmond Co., but town residents use the pool the least of the three municipal units.
