Mayor says provincial funding will help showcase town

The mayor of Port Hawkesbury says $20,000 for signage will go a long way to showing the town is a destination.

Randy Delorey, the MLA for Antigonish and the provincial health minister, announced the provincial funding for signage and wayfinding for the Destination Reeves St. project at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre Friday.

Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, the town’s mayor, says the signage will make people stop, and that’s good for business.

After the funding announcement, Chisholm-Beaton said they want to support business owners and economic development in the town.

“It’s crucial that we help our businesses to give them a hand up,” she said. “In order to create a destination, you need signage so that people know what we have (to) offer here in the town.”

Chisholm-Beaton said there will also be seeing traffic calming measures to encourage people to look around and stop in the Port Hawkesbury.

She said work on a new active transportation trail that will connect Embree Island and NSCC Strait Area Campus to the downtown core is already underway.
