A local mayor says it’s important officials finally have a long-term agreement for Point Tupper fire service.
A ten-year deal for fire protection between Port Hawkesbury and Richmond Co. came into effect Apr. 1.
After April’s regular council meeting, Port Hawkesbury Mayor Brenda Chisholm-Beaton said she’s happy they’ve come to a mutually beneficial solution.
“To provide that much needed stability to a very important industrial centre that our entire region relies on.”
The nearby Port Hawkesbury Volunteer Fire Department is now responsible for the Richmond Co. industrial park and surrounding residential area.
Point Tupper fire service had been a contentious issue for over a year.
Chisholm-Beaton said she’s glad that time is over.
“We’re really happy that we have been able to negotiate a solution that Richmond Co. council feels is fair, that the town of Port Hawkesbury feels is fair.”
Richmond Co. council has agreed to pay the town $60,000 a year, increasing by $1000 a year for each year of the agreement, to provide fire protection.
