Memorial Monument to honour Austin Letcher Sr.

Port Hawkesbury is unveiling a memorial monument this weekend.

The tribute will honour conservation officer Austin Letcher Sr. who tragically lost his life in the line of duty on October 8, 1967.

The Town worked closely with his family members ensure the monument is both respectful and representative of Letcher’s legacy.

“Austin Letcher Sr. was more than a conservation officer—he was a protector of the land, a respected public servant, and a member of our extended community whose dedication continues to inspire,” says Mayor Brenda Chisholm-Beaton.

“We felt it was important to create a public space that honours his memory in a way that’s both visible and connected to the natural world he worked so hard to protect,” she added.

You can join the reveal ceremony on Saturday, October 18th at 11 a.m.

It will be held on the Hemlock Trail at Reeves Street and Macmaster Road by the water fountain.

The location was thoughtfully selected where there’s year-round accessibility that encourages outdoor recreation and appreciation of the environment which reflects the values Letcher upheld throughout his career.
