Mi’kmaq artist named to long list for national award

Mi’kmaq artist Alan Syliboy is one of 25 Canadian artists who have been named candidates for the National Gallery of Canada’s Sobey Art Award.

Syliboy is a painter from Millbrook First Nation. His website describes his work as being, “influenced by the indigenous Mi’kmaq rock drawing and quill weaving traditions.” His vibrant creations explore themes of family and spirituality, among others.

Syliboy’s daily drum series, in which he posts a different image of an Indigenous drum design each day, has garnered him a lot of attention and acclaim.

The winner of the award will be given $400,000, making it one of the the most prestigious and lucrative art awards in Canada.
