Municipality taking steps to mitigate sewage smell in local community

The Warden of the Municipality of the County of Inverness says they’re taking steps to mitigate a sewage smell in the community of Inverness.

At Thursday’s regular council meeting, councilors passed two motions:

First, they amended a provincial capital funding requested to include assessment and predesign for Inverness’s wastewater plant.

Second, they approved first reading of the county’s new sewage discharge bylaw, which would allow them to penalize customers who put undue stress on any municipal wastewater system.

Afterwards, Warden Betty Ann MacQuarrie told The Hawk it’s a direct response to Inverness’s wastewater woes.

“It’s a bylaw that we didn’t have in our municipality that we deemed important to have,” she said. “Without a bylaw we can’t give somebody an order to stop whatever is going into the systems, so with the bylaw we are able to take action.”

MacQuarrie said the next step is to hold a public meeting to get community input on the new measure.
