New affordable housing officially opens in Antigonish

An official opening welcomed 17 affordable units in Antigonish.

The town, the county, and the province, and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) all supported the project on Appleseed Drive and attended the opening on Friday, along with the families living there.

Board Chair, Colleen Cameron, speaks to our newsroom about the success of Antigonish Affordable Housing over the past 10 years.

“We actually built 43 units, and then we were donated two houses, which takes us to 45. That’s a big deal in a small community. And that’s totally with volunteers.”

She says there’s a big need for housing in this community.

“Our intention is to build community, and with the community room, the community garden boxes, we’re fostering that sense of community, and some are embracing it,” says Cameron.

“There’s a good number of children around now, and it’s nice to see them all out playing and seeing some of the seniors interacting with the children.”

What’s coming next

Antigonish Affordable Housing plans to build 120 to 150 different types of housing within the next year.

A couple of years ago, Dr. Amy Hendricks gave land for the future project on the outskirts of town.

“We are in the pre-development stages. We did a lot of the groundwork [including] the Geotech surveys and environmental assessment, and we’ve engaged with an architect, shared Cameron.

The concept of what the group is going to look at building next was revealed at Friday’s opening.
