New COVID-19 case identified at StFX

There has been another COVID-19 case in a StFX student.

Andy Hakin, President of Saint Francis Xavier University, confirmed a new case was found in an off-campus student Thursday.

Hakin says the case is travel related, and the student is self isolating as required.

He says Public Health is managing contact tracing, while the university is following its student support plan.

Meantime, Hakin announced a student, unrelated to the case confirmed Thursday, has been fined for violating Public Health guidelines.

He says RCMP responded to a call in Powers Hall, on campus, Wednesday and issued the fine related to a gathering that exceeded maximum size limits.

Hakin says the student will be subject to StFX’s internal disciplinary process.

Also, five new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the province Thursday.

Department of Health and Wellness officials say three are in Central Zone, two are in Eastern Zone, and all are travel related.

Provincal data shows one active case in the Antigonish & Guysborough Community Health Network, and two in the Inverness, Victoria & Richmond Community Health Network.

It shows 40 active infections provincewide.

As well, there has been another UK variant case identified. The person is a resident, but one who is living and working outside the province.

Officials say there are no known close contacts here.

They say this brings the total number of UK variant cases to 23.
