Local mill to stop accepting wood deliveries in wake of COVID-19

The province’s last major mill will stop accepting wood deliveries at the end of the day Saturday.

Port Hawkesbury Paper mill co-managers Mike Hartery and Bevan Lock say the plant prepares for a slowdown this time of year because of soft ground conditions and spring weight restrictions, but the COVID-19 pandemic has forced them to take additional measures.

Lock tells The Hawk they normally stock extra to get them through the lower supply period and have been able to take in more than usual due to Northern Pulp’s shutdown.

“We have a healthy inventory,” he says. “We would be able to ride through here with the inventory that we have well into the early summer.”

Lock says the decision was hard and will impact workers responsible for receiving at the plant.

He says it’s too soon to comment on potential layoffs.
