Piper’s Pub fire being investigated

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of a fire that has badly damaged an iconic hangout in the heart of Antigonish.

Piper’s Pub, which has been standing for nearly 60 years, went up in flames early Monday morning causing extensive fire, water and smoke damage.

The Antigonish Town Fire Department led the efforts to extinguish the fire following the reports of heavy black smoke coming from the College Street pub.

Although fire crews determined it started in the kitchen, the cause is still unknown.

Twenty-three firefighters were on the scene, along with the Antigonish County Fire Department, RCMP, the Town of Antigonish Public Works Department and the Town of Antigonish Electric Department.

According to a statement from the pub, they remain closed but have received a lot of support coming from the community.

We have reached out to the pub for comment.
