Pirates present year-end awards

The Strait Pirates have handed out their annual awards.

Team officials say they didn’t have the opportunity for a traditional year-end banquet because their season ended on a long weekend and players finished their exams then headed back to their respective hometowns.

Matthew Morgan and Cody Smith shared the team’s Most Valuable Player award for the regular season; Smith was named Playoff MVP, while Morgan also received the Best Defenseman award.

Liam MacKinnon was named Rookie of the Year, Most Dedicated went to Peter Kopf, Bryce Reynolds was recognized for Sportsmanship and Ability, Most Underrated was presented to Josh MacMillan, and Cullen MacEachern was named Most Improved.

The President’s Award went to Avery Warner, Jacob Keagan received the Coaches Award, Olan Spears was presented the Bob McColl Award, Taylor Pierce was the team’s scoring leader, and Randon MacKinnon was named Pirate of the Year.

The Pirates lost to the Sackville Blazers in six games in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League final in April; they finished the regular season, the best in franchise history, first overall in the 12-team league.
