Twenty-one people have large fines to pay after police broke up a “Freedom Rally” on Citadel Hill in Halifax.
The protest took place on Saturday despite a court injunction issued the day before by the Nova Scotia Supreme Court making such gatherings illegal.
The protests were organized in defiance of lockdown measures and public health restrictions.
“Despite repeat warnings, there are individuals who are still choosing to bend the rules and take risks. The events in Halifax have once again demonstrated that disregard,” said Halifax Regional Police Chief Dan Kinsella. “People must educate themselves on the restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic, including the ones in the court injunction issued on Friday. The current risks are much too great, and we will continue to take all measures at our disposal to protect the public.”
Meantime, police say another illegal gathering in Halifax’s south end led to tickets and arrests.
Roughly 200 cars were involved in a Free Palestine rally in regards to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
