Port Hawkesbury will be a little more accessible soon.
All three levels of government will be putting up money to add an extra seven kilometers of multi-use trails to the town’s existing trail system.
Premier Iain Rankin, members of the Liberal government and Mayor Brenda Chisholm-Beaton made the announcement today at a press conference at Grant’s Pond.
The trails will connect parts of town that pose a challenge to some residents, says Mayor Chisholm-Beaton, including linking the existing trail to the NSCC campus.
“That is after more than 30 years without safe access to the campus, when the only safe way was to get there by driving,” she said at the press conference.
All three levels of government are pitching in to build the new trails, which will cost $3 million.
The Town of Port Hawkesbury has pledged $800,000 toward the project, while the federal government will put up $1 million and the provincial government will kick in $1.2 million.
The new trails will add on-and-off-road pathways connected to MacQuarrie Drive, Reeves Street, the waterfront and an eastern town connector.
It will also connect Port Hawkesbury to the Nova Scotia Blue Route cycling network, via Tamarac Drive.
Construction is expected to begin later this summer, with the project taking five years to complete.
