Pride flag flies in Victoria Co.

Victoria County raised the pride flag for the first time.

The flag was raised in a small ceremony at the Victoria Co. municipal building Wednesday.

District 2 Councillor Perla MacLeod says council decided it was time for the county to acknowledge and show support for its LGBTQ community.

MacLeod tells the hawk it’s about showing young people Victoria County wants them.

“You hear that young people leave because they’re part of the LGBTQ community, and they don’t come home. So we want to let them know that they can stay here, and they don’t have to go anywhere.”

MacLeod says she hopes this is just the first step, and hopes this will signal to the LGBTQ community that council wants to hear from them.
