Councillors in the Town of Antigonish have voted down a motion to change the CACL’s tax rates.
Reps with the Canadian Association for Community Living reps requested their operation move to a residential tax assessment instead of commercial.
Councillors voted 6-1 against the motion at May’s regular town council meeting Monday night; Sean Cameron was the only councillor to vote in favour.
After the meeting, Laurie Boucher, the mayor of the town, said they realize it’s been a tough year for a lot of groups- including CACL- and there are other ways they can help.
“With (the) number of not-for-profits that we have in the Town of Antigonish, council has determined that the best way to give somebody support is through our community grant program.”
Boucher said the will of council is subsidizing taxes is not the way to help, but there are other avenues available.
She said they invite CACL reps to reach out to learn what financial assistance may be out there for them.
