Sewage plant upgrades underway in Antigonish

There’s progress happening with the Antigonish sewage treatment plant.

Mayor Sean Cameron gave us the inside scoop on the updates expected to start in December and be done before the next warm weather hits.

The first step he says is using a pump to recirculate water back to the frontend, so sewage is not dumped into the harbour.

“The second step we’re working on, of course, is the $5 million upgrade, which will screen out all the things that should not go into the sewage system,” says Cameron.

He reminds residents they can help eliminate clogs in the aeriation system by only flushing down human waste and toilet paper.

Reducing other waste from the sewage and the new frontend screening system will allow workers more time to help lower the smell by adding deodorizers, moving aeration hoses, and balancing of the water, he explains.

“You’ll never get rid of total smell. I mean, it’s, it’s an open lagoon with raw sewage in it,” he says.

Allowing more cold water and oxygen into the lagoon will activate bacteria eating organisms to do their job to also reduce odors in the community.
