The local chapter of national program to get students engaged in the federal election launches today at StFX.
StFX student union Vice President External Affairs Sarah Elliott says the national Get Out the Vote campaign aims to get students to meet candidates, voice their concerns, and vote in the federal election.
Elliott tells The Hawk they want students to know how much they can do to influence politicians.
“We have the numbers and we hold the power, so it’s important that we can mobilize altogether, and we can reflect the numbers that we have into the policies that politicians are creating,” she says. “What we’re trying to do is demystify the whole political process and voting, and all that stuff that seems a little bit overwhelming.”
Elliott says they’re holding a carnival with local food trucks to help draw people to their candidate meet and greet.
She says the campaign runs right up to election day on October 21.
