Stickland says he won’t be pushed around

The NDP candidate for Guysborough-Tracadie said most candidates won’t do what they need to make life better for their constituents.

Matt Stickland was acclaimed by the riding’s NDP members last week, a few days after the election was called.

Stickland tells The Hawk, whether by party pressure or fear of not getting re-elected, MLAs often don’t follow through.

“A lot of our politicians, they get out, they go door to door, they promise you the world,” he said. “Then they get into office, and then they’re whipped by their party, and then they don’t do what they say they’re going to do.”

Stickland said he’s not concerned about party politics, he’s willing to make unpopular moves if it’ll help normal people.

He said it’s hard to hear the stories of the people he talks to on the campaign trail, and people are facing the same issues everywhere.

“Their landlords are selling out their properties from under them, they can’t afford to buy a house, they’re waiting too long for an ambulance, they can’t get the healthcare they need.”

Stickland said he wants to be the kind of candidate normal people can trust to fight for them.
