Strait Regional Centre for Education celebrates Mi’kmaw History Month

Both Treaty Day and Mi’kmaw History Month start October 1 throughout Nova Scotia.

This month is a time to honour the culture, history and contributions of the Mi’kmaw people.

Teachers from the Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) engage students in meaningful activities to explore the connections and deepen understanding by providing Treaty Education and cultural learning in October and year-round.

The theme of Mi’kmaw History Month in 2025 is ‘Storytelling and Storytellers’ to celebrate the power of stories that take shape by the land and waters, carry through generations, and promote laughter, teaching, and truth.

Storytelling is a living record of Mi’kmaw history and values that connects people to each other and past ancestors.

“In the spirit of peace, friendship, truth and reconciliation, the Strait Regional Centre for Education encourages students, staff, parents, guardians, families and community partners to share in the celebration of Mi’kmaw History Month 2025,” says SRCE.

They share numerous valuable online resources that provide information and insight on the contributions of the Mi’kmaq community and heritage in Nova Scotia and across Canada and the world on their website.
