The Fine Art Of Garbage Picking!

Summer is here, and there are so many things to be excited about!
I might be one of the few people who gets excited about seeing garbage on the side of the road this time of year… but I bet I’m not the only one!

Now, I don’t mean regular garbage in bags—I’m talking about the “Free to Take” items people leave at the curb. Sometimes, you can find some really useful things! I feel like the fine art of garbage picking is a very Nova Scotia thing. We’re frugal people and great at reusing items others no longer want.

I’ve found some amazing stuff, from computer chairs to a small camera that plumbers use to fix drains (and yes, it still worked!).

As I said, this season is the best time to keep your eyes open. Many people are doing summer cleanouts of their barns or sheds. If you’re new to garbage picking, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Always double-check with the owner if you’re unsure, but if it’s clearly at the curb, it’s usually fair game.

Here’s What to Look For:

  • Furniture: Solid wood pieces can be refinished or upcycled.
  • Electronics: People sometimes toss working or easily fixable gadgets.
  • Home Decor: Mirrors, frames, lamps, and art can be cleaned or repurposed.
  • Books & Media: Vintage books, vinyl records, and DVDs can be valuable.
  • Tools & Hardware: Often still functional or repairable.
