Town of Antigonish didn’t raise taxes because it didn’t have to

The Mayor of Antigonish says taxes didn’t go up because council couldn’t justify it.

Mayor Laurie Bouche says her staff brought forward a budget that was within the town’s means without denying services to residents.

Bouche told The Hawk the budget accomplishes everything council needs it to.

“We’re increasing our service, were increasing our capital budget, we are also paying attention to some accessibility issues that we have. So we’re doing everything we’re supposed to do without raising taxes,” says Bouche.

Bouche also says the town’s wind farm, federal gas tax money, and increased property assessments made it easier for staff to write a budget without a tax increase.

However, she says future tax increases are not off the table, if they are required to protect important services.
