The Strait Area Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Port Hawkesbury are working together to build capacity around housing for the town. The chamber and the town held information sessions last week at the civic centre to give residents an opportunity to learn about possible interventions that enable housing development and to take part in discussions on housing that meets the needs of all community members.
The chamber issued a request for proposals earlier this year for a consultant to administer a housing capacity pilot project within the town, a project that aims to address the needs of housing across the spectrum. The contract was awarded to the community development corporation New Dawn Enterprises an organization with over 30 years of housing development experience.
The Chambers Executive Director Misty MacDonald says attracting and retaining employees is challenging due to the lack of housing options and in order to grow the economy innovative housing solutions are needed.
