We’koqma’q First Nation announced on social media that the community is safe. In response to a shooting, a lockdown was implemented as a precaution. Businesses and community buildings were ordered to close but the We’koqma’q one stop, gaming, and tobacco shop reopened at 3PM and they will close at their usual time.
An 18-year-old suspect was arrested in relation to the shooting and the firearm that was used has been recovered.
The shooting was reported around 1:30 this morning and the shots were fired at a vehicle that was occupied by a woman and a child.
RCMP Corporal Chris Marshall says the vehicle was driving down Highway 105 in the First Nation. No one was injured.
The Inverness County District RCMP responded to a report of a break-in at the local hardware store on Highway 105 that occurred overnight, and ammunition was stolen.
These two incidents are believed to be related and the suspect will remain in custody as the investigation continues.
