2026 Tree for Boston coming from East Amherst

It’s that time of year again.

The 2026 Tree for Boston has been selected from East Amherst.

It will go to the City of Boston’s 85th annual tree-lighting ceremony on December 3 in the Boston Common.

The province says the 14-metre (46-foot) white spruce is the latest “thank you” to Boston for sending medical personnel and supplies to Nova Scotia after the Halifax Explosion, 109 years ago.

It was December 6, 1917, when two ships collided in the harbour resulting in an explosion that killed nearly 2,000 people and injuring thousands more.

Henry and Pat Knol say they feel “very honoured” that a tree from their property will head to Massachusettes.

“We are proud to be part of a such a long-standing tradition. What makes this experience even more special is that some years ago our cousin transported the tree to Boston while working for the Department of Transportation,” say the Knols in a statement.

“Although he is no longer with us, it is very special to know that our family has this connection to such a special tradition, and we feel very fortunate to now be a part of it ourselves.”

A tree-cutting ceremony will be November 18 at 10:30 a.m. at 880 Hwy. 6, East Amherst, Cumberland County.
