$3 million announced for water system work

At an announcement this morning in Antigonish, government officials committed over $3 million for water and wastewater infrastructure improvements across the region.

Central Nova MP Sean Fraser said three projects will receive support; water treatment plant upgrades in Arichat, improvements to wastewater systems in Colchester Co., and an expansion of the water system in Antigonish.

Fraser said these upgrades aren’t optional.

“It’s the price of admission in the 21st century for businesses,” he said. “If you can’t provide access to reliable, clean, and high-pressure water they’re going to find another community to put people to work.”

Fraser said the water and wastewater work will help the region in the long term.

He said, it will also have a positive impact in the short term.

“This is something that is not only going to help build stronger communities and create opportunities for business,” he said. “It’s actually going to put people to work directly in the construction phase of these projects.”

About $1.2 million has been pledged by the federal government, about $1 million by the provincial government, and over $800,000 by the Municipalities of Richmond, Colchester, and Antigonish.
